This summer, Code-Switch Consultants worked with the University of Liverpool’s Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences to run a series of employability and career confidence workshops for SHAPE researchers.
Before the series began, researchers took part in a discovery exercise that revealed striking priorities. More than 80% wanted to get a clearer picture of career paths both in and outside academia. Over 75% said they needed help building the confidence to go after new opportunities. More than two-thirds wanted support in recognising and articulating their transferable skills.
The workshops addressed these areas head-on, combining hands-on tools with lived experience from external experts, giving participants practical strategies and fresh perspectives on career options.
The response was resoundingly positive and many researchers left with concrete actions in hand, from polishing LinkedIn profiles to planning portfolio-building opportunities.
As one participant summed it up:
“The session brought much-needed clarity in my career goals and helped me think outside the box about my options.”
