What would you say was your most significant learning experience during the Full Switch ™ programme?

Indeed, it was during the initial stages of the programme, when we were tasked with deciphering the clients’ needs and effectively expressing their vision or their expectations from us. This was quite a new experience for me, given that in an educational context, things are typically more straightforward. In such a setting, objectives are laid out clearly, often driven by government-imposed policies. On the contrary, in the business world, things are a bit more nebulous. We had to be both receptive and savvy to truly understand the clients’ real needs and make every effort to establish objectives that match our workflow and goals. This experience taught me valuable skills in negotiation, which were applicable both in dealing with clients and in internal team discussions.

Do you have any advice on client interaction?

There are a few key points to remember. Firstly, it’s crucial to understand our limitations as researchers or project managers. Clients, investing their time, naturally want maximum outcomes. However, we may not always have the time or resources to cater to all their needs. Therefore, it’s important for the entire team and myself to be aware of our boundaries, enabling us to remain firm during discussions with the client.

Secondly, maintaining regular communication with the clients is essential, even if it’s about minor updates. This helps reassure them that we’re actively working on the project and keeps them informed about its progress. It’s important to share both good news and challenges with them. If things are going well, they’ll be pleased to hear it. And if we face difficulties, it’s better to be transparent so that they have a comprehensive understanding of what’s happening.

Do you believe that the Full Switch ™ programme was instrumental in securing your current position?

Before, finding part-time work was tough due to my lack of UK experience. This programme, however, helped me land an internship, a critical step forward. A distinct aspect of this programme was the acquisition of new skills, particularly in project management and client engagement, which I didn’t possess before. My previous work environment was in schools, where interactions were largely confined to the same group of people. Transitioning into the industry, I was provided the opportunity to liaise with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders—a factor that I believe government initially sought. Communication, negotiation, and presentation skills were among the new competencies I developed, thanks to the Full Switch ™ programme.

Moreover, the programme emphasised project management skills. It helped me envision a future where work wouldn’t be as monotonous as before, opening the possibility of engaging in project-based settings. It was my first time managing a project from inception to completion, and the experience I gained was significant and shareable during interviews. I believe this aspect left a strong impression on them.

Did you bring up your involvement with Code-Switch during your internship interview?

Indeed, I did discuss my participation in Code-Switch and the project management methodology I employed, which were elements not typically encountered in my industry or my PhD studies. However, I leveraged my research abilities to grasp these new concepts and collaborated with clients to establish our initial objectives. The interviewers showed keen interest in learning more about the project, my approach to it, and my time management strategies. I strongly believe that my experience with Code-Switch significantly influenced my success in securing the internship. The interviewers displayed a particular interest in my project management strategies, how I managed expectations from all involved parties, and my understanding of my boundaries as a researcher. All of these skills were honed during my time on the Code-Switch project, and sharing these experiences proved to be one of the most impactful parts of my interview.

During the interview process, I was given a written test where I had to compose a policy brief within an hour. This brief pertained to topics that I was not previously familiar with, which mirrored my experience with the Code-Switch project where I had to delve into completely new territories. I needed to utilise my research abilities to comprehend various policy papers and then produce a document that was easily digestible and got straight to the point. This task was also akin to business communications with clients. I believe my time with Code-Switch significantly enhanced my writing skills. The entire process of communicating with clients, understanding their needs from a conversation or document, was instrumental in securing this job.

How did the Full Switch ™ programme contribute to your career aspirations?

Primarily, the programme afforded me unique experiences and opportunities that have already proven beneficial. These experiences have opened doors that may have remained closed without any UK work experience. Secondly, the programme has helped me gain clarity on my career path. From the start of my PhD, I knew I didn’t want to pursue an academic career. However, I was unsure about the specific path I wanted to take, whether it was working in an NGO for educational institutions or something else. Now, I have a better understanding of my preferences and enjoy the role of a project manager or in a researcher role. I also have a clearer perspective on whether I want to work in government or industry.
