Empowering The Patient-healthcare

EMPOWERING THE PATIENT-HEALTHCARE PROVIDER RELATIONSHIP VIA TECHNOLOGY

The Challenge

TIYGA (Time is Your Greatest Asset) is a Manchester-based health technology business whose mission is to help people to help themselves to achieve better health outcomes. To achieve this mission, TIYGA has developed an app which enables people to monitor their wellbeing. The TIYGA app also offers an innovative new solution for patients to track symptoms and report them to healthcare providers, facilitating better communication and understanding of conditions leading to better treatment decisions.

To date, TIYGA has worked with patient support charities, and it now seeks to extend the use of the app into clinical settings. Our Associate Research Consultants, an interdisciplinary team of PhD researchers from academic institutions in the UK and USA, were tasked with generating insights into the drivers, barriers, and economic value of implementing the app in healthcare settings.

Objectives

1. To identify the characteristics of early adopters of digital health technologies amongst healthcare providers in the UK.
2. To identify the barriers and enablers of adopting such technologies.
3. To generate insights and actionable recommendations to inform decisions about expanding the use of the TIYGA app into healthcare settings.

Approach

1. In-depth interviews with healthcare providers working in different domains – mental health, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy – to generate rich data about experiences and perceptions of digital tools, the digital tools in current/previous use, the barriers, and enablers of adopting such technologies, and the characteristics of those healthcare providers most likely to adopt the TIYGA app.
2. Qualitative analysis of the interview data, identifying themes and patterns.
3. Collate and interpret data to generate insights and evidence-based recommendations to inform robust business decisions.

Impact

The team identified key barriers and opportunities, and the characteristics of healthcare providers who are more likely to adopt the TIYGA app. From the research, the team also produced a set of evidence-based and actionable recommendations informing:
1. The feasibility of introducing the TIYGA app in a variety of different healthcare settings and domains.
2. The approach to marketing & positioning the app to maximise uptake, including market entry points, key contacts and value propositions.
3. Future app development considerations to exploit opportunities based on the identification on healthcare provider/patient requirements.
