Envirolution Case Study

The Envirolution Revolution

Challenge

Envirolution is a cooperative of volunteers established 10 years ago to explore creative ways to enrich lives, communities and the environment. Envirolution organises an annual environmental festival in Manchester to engage the community in the achievement of its mission.

As part of The University of Manchester’s Collaboration Labs programme, our Associate Research Consultants were tasked with evidencing the impact of the Envirolution festival and developing a comprehensive impact assessment tool to evaluate and showcase Envirolution’s work.

Objectives

1. Analyse the impact of the Envirolution festival since its inception.

2. Create a research strategy and practical evaluation tools to inform Envirolution’s future work.

3. Develop a conceptual framework to elucidate and assess the Envirolution operating model and which can be applied to similar projects elsewhere.

4. Collaborate with Envirolution to produce a paper for the Place-based Climate Action Network (PCAN) conference and a presentation for Manchester City Council.

Approach

1. Conduct a literature review to synthesise existing knowledge and research of topics related to Envirolution, its model and its purpose.

2. Survey Envirolution’s stakeholders (e.g. stall holders, volunteers, visitors, and members of the Envirolution team) to gain insight into the various impacts of the festival since its inception on different individuals and groups.

3. Quantitative analysis of the data provided by Envirolution from previous festivals.

4. Produce an impact analysis report evaluating the impact of the Envirolution festival since its inception and providing accessible guidance for evaluating future impact.

Impact

This project delivered a detailed analysis of the impact of the Envirolution festival on a range of stakeholders using robust quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The project outputs enabled Envirolution to raise its profile and increase impact by demonstrating its environmental change-making capacity to key institutions in Manchester, project partners and festival participants. The project also delivered new strategic capability to the organisation through the delivery of a framework and tools for the ongoing evaluation of the impact of its activities.

Code-Switch supported the delivery of this project as part of The University of Manchester’s Collaboration Labs programme. This programme was funded by the ESRC NPIF Accelerating Business Collaborations account.
