In Place of War (IPoW) is a global organisation that uses artistic creativity in places of conflict as a tool for positive change. IPoW enables grassroots change-makers in music, theatre and across the arts to transform cultures of violence and suffering into hope, opportunity and freedom by creating cultural spaces for international artistic collaboration and mobilisation, training and education.
As part of The University of Manchester’s Collaboration Labs programme, our Associate Research Consultants were tasked with enabling IPoW to demonstrate and track the long-term impact of its past, present and future programmes supporting change makers across the globe.
1. Conduct an in-depth case study on the long-term impact of IPoW’s CASE (Creative and Social Entrepreneur) programme in Uganda in 2018.
2. Create an analytical tool that can be used to track the impact of current and future programmes, with specific reference to IPoW’s current COVID-19 response projects.
1. Collect qualitative data through personal testimonies and questionnaires and conduct qualitative analyses to evaluate the social impact of IPoW’s CASE programme in Uganda in 2018.
2. Collect quantitative data through questionnaires and conduct quantitative analyses to evaluate the economic impact of IPoW’s CASE programme in Uganda in 2018. Quantitative measures will include employment, income and Gross Value Added (GVA), providing a basis for for long-term data collection and analysis of economic impact.
3. Develop a tracking interface using R/Shiny, an accessible data analysis app, to deliver ongoing access to Exploratory Data Analysis and “value for money” based on IPoW’s quantitative data.
This project demonstrated the social and economic impact of one of IPoW’s projects through the delivery of a comprehensive evaluation using qualitative and quantitative research and analysis methodologies. The project outputs delivered new capability to IPoW, facilitating the ongoing tracking and analysis of its impact and the achievement of its long-term goals. This new capability facilitated strategic decision-making and provided IPoW the assets to evidence impact, a key factor in securing funding and support.
Code-Switch supported the delivery of this project as part of The University of Manchester’s Collaboration Labs programme. This programme was funded by the ESRC NPIF Accelerating Business Collaborations account.
